St Fechins

St.Fechins 3-17 Wolfe Tones 3-5

St.Fechins qualified for the second round of the Leinster Junior Hurling Championship after a comrehensive victory over the Longford Champions. Played in ideal conditions in the Gaelic Grounds, the Termonfeckin men were by far the better team. A goal in the first minute by Barry Devlin was soon followed by another from Seaghan Conneely. Points quickly followed from Paul Matthews, Michael Ryan and David Stephenson. Tones fought back, striking the net twice by John Newman and Patrick Cullen. The Fechins went in ahead 2-8 to 2-2 at half time.

An early second half goal by the visitors spurred the locals on even further. Another Conneely goal was followed by eight points in succession to the winners. David Stephenson was excellent with his free taking. With Paddy McCormack, Donal Ryan well on top at midfield, the strong half back line of Cathal Ryan, the Byrne twins on fire the result was really never in doubt. Next Saturday they face Kilkenny’s Mooncoin in the same venue. They will go into the game with the confidence of causing an upset.

Naomh Fionnbarra/Lannleire U-13 team lost to St. Kevins 4-22(34) to 3-3(12) in the U-13 Division 3 League on Wednesday 5th October.

What a fantastic night in Darver for the young U-16 footballers of Naomh Fionnbarra and Lannleire last night. To beat one of the kingpins of Louth football, in a thrilling, nerve racking, high scoring competitive final as this was a credit to the full panel. A huge crowd were treated to a highly entertaining and free-flowing game of football that could have gone either way until the very end. Slightly unlucky to be 1 point down at half time, our lads knuckled down and did what they have been doing all year, worked their socks off until the final whistle. 2 points down going into injury time, a free taken by our captain Adam Hanratty was fumbled by the Blues keeper into the back of the net, and the roar of delight could be heard in Anagasson & Dunleer. With some injury time still to be played our lads defended with their lives and deserved the joy at the final whistle. A very memorble achievement and great celebration when Adam was presented with the cup. Final score: Naomh Fionnbarra/Lannleire 4-9(21) Newtown Blues 4-8(20).

The double is on the cards, as the U-16 team is also through to the Division 3 League Final v Roche Emmets next Wednesday in Darver at 7pm.

Team: Matthew O’Reilly (NF), Luke Kennedy (NF), Tunjai Ifaturoti (L), Ruairi Crofts (NF), Kalum Regan (NF), C.J. Corentin (L), Jack Maguire (L), Adam Hanratty (NF) 1-0, Pierce Hawkins (L), Killian Gregory (L) 0-6, Josh Crosbie (NF), Caomhin Maher (L), Christopher Leonard (L) 0-2, Ciaran Markey (NF) 3-1, Jack Kearney (NF), Thomas McCreesh (NF), Aaron McArdle (L), Colum Kierans (NF), Dillon Dunne (NF), Ronan Kelly (NF), Jordi Smith (L), Jake McShane (L).

The Naomh Fionnbarra/Lannleire U-14’s lost the U-14 B Championship Final to the Dreadnots 5-9(24) to 2-7(13) on Sunday 9th October in Darver. The lads gave it their all but it was not to be. Hard luck to all involved.

Following the U-14 Final the Naomh Fionnbarra/Lannleire U-18’s were narrowly beaten in the Minor B Championship Final by O’Connells/Stabannon Parnells/John Mitchells on a scoreline of 3-10(19) to 2-11(17). As with all of their games this year the lads gave it everything and at the end of the game it all came down to a penalty kick which was saved by the O’Connells/Stabannon Parnells/John Mitchells. Hard luck lads.

Team: Sean Walsh (L), Pauric Kierans (NF), Tunjai Ifaturoti (L), Conor Kirwan (L), Ciaran Dunne (L), Michael McArdle (NF), Killian Gregory (L), Patrick McGrane (NF) 0-3, Brendan Simms (NF), Pierce Hawkins (L) 0-1, Niall Woods (NF), Caomhin Maher (L), Conal Maher (L) 0-5(4f), Caolan Leech (NF), Adam Hanratty (NF). Subs: Cian Carroll (L) for Conor Kirwan, Kieran Boyle (NF) for Ciaran Dunne, Josh Crosbie (NF) for Killian Gregory, Callum Grimes (L), Matthew Monaghan (NF), Darren Clinton (NF), Jack Kearney (NF), C.J. Corentin (L).

Development on the new club training field has continued and the contractor Rock Sportsfields has levelled a lot of the field. Work continues on the upgrade of the flood lights on the existing field and the walking/running track around the field. The following jobs are to be done; Complete cabling on left hand side of field – need to dig a small trench for cable to last 2 lighting columns. Fix and Concrete 4 sleeves for lights on right hand side. Level clay in bottom left corner. Dig out the ends of the field to complete track – these should be sprayed off with roundup if possible. Spread surplus clay along right hand side at houses. Back fill and Compact stone. Top dress and compact entire track. Erect poles and wire up lights.

The club would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of John Barton, Wyanstown who passed away recently. John had a distinguished playing career with the ‘Barrs starring as full forward winning the McArdle Cup in 1960 and 1963. Prior to the formation of Naomh Fionnbarra in 1957, John played with St. Colmcilles. John continued to support the club all of his life and there was no happier man than him when he got his hands on the Christy Bellew Cup in 2015. May he Rest In Peace.

Kind Regards,

Nicholas Butterly P.R.O.

80’s Night
Huge thanks to everybody who made it to the 80s disco. We had a big crowd who embraced the music & the fashion, from that great decade.Pop,rock, metal, new wave, ska, slow sets & Mickey even snuck in a few country numbers:)To those who dressed up,a big high five.We even had a local garage owner who dressed up 80s style, but it was the 1880s!The fashion police are on their way to confiscate his robes:)Big thanks to Mc Kenna Man for sponsoring a clothes voucher & we recycled their shop window background(cassette wallpaper)& it looked the biz. Thanks to Azzie,Vax & Wax,for sponsoring the case of wine. Thanks to Karen,Hannah,Emma & Fintan for helping decorate the room.
Thanks to Collette & Bernard for the photos & to Sean & Martin on door duty. Also thanks to Joanne,James & Peter for keeping the lubricant flowing. Thanks to Kevin for keeping facebook updated.Last but not least to Mickey’Dynamo himself, who pumped out over 6 hours of heart pounding, foot stomping 80s hits. All his retro lights & signs, add to the old school vibe, brilliantly.I suspect he may actually be a vampire,as he hasn’t aged a bit since the 80s.Or maybe he has a good skin routine:)So that’s it till next October, when the last of the trilogy will take place.I hope you enjoyed the night as much as I did & I look forward to us all meeting up again in 2017,God willing.Till then, keep it 80s dudes!

Geraldines

Layout 1
Under 15 Div 2 Final
Geraldines 3-8  St Josephs 2-9
This Geraldines team came through a very tough sporting game against our near neighbours St Josephs. Played on a lovely Autumn evening both teams provided a great spectacle of football for the sizeable crowd.
The Joes got off to the better start and had 3 quick points on the scoreboard before the Geraldines could get the ball out of their half. Captain Conor Soraghan got the first point with a trademark break up the field. Shortly afterwards star full forward Conor Magowan scored a great individual goal to give the young Gers a one point lead.
Back came the Joes with 3 more points before man of the match Oran O Hanlon reduced the Joes lead to one following good build up play by Richie Dunne. The wind was picking up now and it took some great defending by Martin O Donnacha , Mark McConnell and Bryan Soraghan to keep the Joes at bay. Eoin Flanagan was getting good distance on his kickouts into the wind and Cathal Purcell was becoming more of a force in midfield. However the last score of the half went the Joes way when Conal McCaul kicked a fabulous point from beyond the 45
Halftime Geraldines 1-2 St Josephs 0-7
With the wind behind them now the Geraldines had more success getting the ball into danger man McGowan and this resulted in an early point. A feature of the game throughout was the battle between Joes fullback Kevin Campbell and Magowan, both men showed their undoubted talents.
Isaac Mc Gahon who was becoming more influential scored the equalising point following a good build up with Ciaran Peelo and James McNamara. The game then swung in the Geraldines favour when two goals rocked the Joes. First Conor Magowan escaped the clutches of Campbell following a great break by the outstanding Donal Leavy to fire low to the net. Then captain Soraghan showed his blistering pace to break through the Joes defence and finish from a tight angle.
But back came the Joes and they responded with a goal of their own which they followed with a great point to leave only two between the sides with 8 minutes remaining. A high ball into the Geraldines square caused panic and in the ensuing scramble the Gers were penalised and referee Brian Brady awarded a penalty to St Josephs.
Given the time left this was a pressure kick but Jack Barron didn’t show any nerves , expertly slotting past Eoin Flanagan. The Gers were up against it now and spurned some good opportunities to draw level , it took an outstanding interception from Liam Cafferty to keep the Gers in the game.
With two minutes left on the clock we won a close range free and Donal Leavy cooly brought the sides level.
Cometh the hour Cometh the man and the excellent Oran O Hanlon won the breaking ball from the checkout and set off on a mazy run before expertly stepping inside his marker and slotting over the bar. There was still time for the Joes to draw level and they might well have were it not for some tenacious tackling and a great interception by Aaron McQuillan. Not content with that he broke forward and fed the ever willing O Hanlon who kicked a sublime point to ensure victory. Referee Bradys whistle was a welcome sound for the Gers who add this years 2A title to last years 2B.
This victory was a result of some dogged performances over the year which every panel member contributed handsomely too. Oisin McDermott and Sean Maguire were introduced last night as subs and played their part in the victory. Finn Reilly and Patrick Brady have been ever-present and their roles in the league victory over the then unbeaten Roche was key to making the final. Adam Gartlan, Peter Woulfe and Ferdia McDonnell also played their parts over the season. Special mention also to Timmy Connolly who fractured his hip against Collon and Luke McSherry who ruptured his cruciate against Roche. It was great to have the two lads on the line last night and we wish them both a speedy recovery. Finally Mark Leavy who at 12 years of age came on to make up the numbers for the last 5 minutes of the roche game and scored 2-1 to ensure victory.
