Paddy Sheelan Cup

Round 2

St Fechins 2-6

Newtown Blues 1-9

St Fechins gained their first point in the Paddy Sheelan Cup in a tight encounter played in Beaulieu on Friday Night. Newtown Blues dominated the opening ten minutes but could not turn possession into points as they kicked five wides in a row. The first score of the night came from the home side when Niall Devlin burst through the Blues defence to score a goal after fifteen minutes. The Blues once again took control of the play and scored four points before half time, three from Robert Carr and one from Fergal O’Donoghue.

The second half began with another Carr point, followed quickly by a Lorcan McQuillan goal to leave the visitors ahead by five early in the half. Niall Devlin started the Fechins comeback with two excellent points. A Danny Burnell free narrowed the margin further but Carr struck again with two further Blues points. A long range point from Fechins midfielder Ryan Sheridan was cancelled out by a point from Paul Moore. Substitute Brendan Fanning broke forward from midfield and slotted over a point to leave three points in the difference. Minutes later Fechins full forward John Crosbie rounded his marker and struck for goal, only to be denied by the woodwork. Luckily Brian Devlin was on hand to finish the ball into the net. A point from Jamie King in the thirtieth minute looked like it might be enough for the Termonfeckin men to take all the points, but a Blues free from McQuillan

Colm Geary Cup (Special Hurling League)

Round 1

St Fechins 3-11

Naomh Moninne 0-5

St Fechins began the new season where they left off in 2016 with a rousing defeat of Naomh Moninne in Beaulieu on Saturday night. With ten players on county duty, they fielded a youthful side in the opening round of the Colm Geary Cup, but their dominance at minor level is having the desired effect with young guns Ian Connor and Liam Ryan dominating play in the middle of the field backed up by an excellent performance from rookie ‘keeper John Stephenson.

The home side enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half and raced to an early lead scoring a goal and eight points without reply. Connor and Ryan opened the scoring with well taken points from play before Michéal Byrne slotted over the first of his frees. Connor and Byrne were on target again before Sean Hodgins found the back of the net for his side’s first goal. Centre back Oisín Byrne put over a point from distance, while John Crosbie and Barry Devlin both struck points from difficult angles. With five minutes remaining in the half, Naomh Moninne got on the scoresheet with a well taken point from play, but from the puck-out Ian Connor had replied for St Fechins with a goal. St Fechins finished out the half with 65’ from Michéal Byrne and a Vincent Hynes point, while a Moninne point on the verge of half time left the score at 2-10 to 0-2.

Naomh Moninne began the second half with a fresh impetus, scoring three unanswered points, two frees from Ronan Geoghegan and one from play by Oisín Drumm, but were unable to close the gap any further. Michéal Byrne scored the last of his four points from placed balls midway through the half and Ian Connor completed his scoring with a second goal. Late in the game John Stephenson ended the scoring with a long distance free. Both teams will be disappointed with the wide count in the second half and will hope to improve when they open their Leinster Club Hurling League campaigns next weekend.

St Fechins:

John Stephenson 0-1 (0-1f), Cormac McAuley, Robert Moynagh, Paddy Reddy, Oisín Byrne 0-1, Donnacha O’Connell, Liam Ryan 0-1, Sean McConnell, Michéal Byrne 0-4 (0-3f, 0-1 65’), Vincent Hynes 0-1, Ian Connor 2-2, Sean Hodgins 1-0, John Crosbie 0-1, Barry Devlin 0-1

PSC Match Report

St Fechins 0-6

Clan na Gael 1-8

With five minutes to go in this first game of the year the teams were level. In the closing minutes the Clans scored 1-2 to end the match with a five point victory. Up to then it looked like the Termonfeckin outfit would prevail on their home turf. On a cold, breezy morning, the locals opened the scoring through Niall Devlin. Two points from Danny Burnell were followed by another from Colm O’Neill. Clan na Gael replied with points from M. Newell and S. Calem to leave the half time score at four points to two in favour of the Fechins. Having played with a strong wind in the first half, St Fechins kicked seven wides, this came back to haunt them at the finish. Playing into the wind the Fechins extended their lead through Colm O’Neill. P. Martin replied for the Clans two minutes later. Niall Devlin restored the three point lead in the twentieth minute, but this was to be the Fechins last score. Two points from C.Noonen were followed by points from A. McGlynn, S. Fitzpatrick and JJ. Quigley. M. McGeary finished the game when he freely tapped the ball into the Fechins net after a mix up in defence.
